Being a Jersey shore expat now living in SoCal, I know my pizza. This is the closest thing that I've come across outside of NJ that lives up to my expectations of what a good pizza is. First of all, they sell pizza by the slice, which is how it should be. Secondly, they hand toss it. Third, its cooked in a real pizza oven, NOT on a wire grill on a conveyor belt. Its thin crust, and its the size of an east-coast large (they only have one size besides a slice, though these aren't boardwalk-sized slices). Ironically, the only other place that I've had Jersey shore-like pizza this good was in Coban, Guatemala, but that's a hole other story.
With that positive review comes a few critiques: Its too thin. Its about 1mm thicker than a cracker crust. More cheese please! There was barely enough cheese to cover the sauce, which gets me onto my third critique, less tomato paste and more "pizza" spices in your sauce. Other than that, you guys make a hell of a pie!
When I saw this place featured on DDD, I had to give this place a try. Their dough is made with bottled water (instead of tap) and the guy mixes it with his arm. Doesn't sound like much but I think it made all the difference.
The boyfriend and I shared 2 slices and a fountain drink (only $6!). I really enjoyed the slice with ricotta, mozzarella, romano cheese, and spinach (no tomato sauce). The ricotta was so fluffy and all the cheeses fused so well together. The boyfriend loved the slice with sundried tomatoes and spinach. Not so much because of the toppings but because of the bread. There's a nice crisp to it when you first sink your teeth in but there's also a tiny doughy center, which is very impressive considering how thin it is. And the boyfriend is an absolute crust-hater but he actually ate the crust at this place. That really says something!
But as great as the food was, the ambiance/neighborhood was just awful. We came at night and we parked a block away and the walk to the place in this sketchy neighborhood was a bit scary. Then the atmosphere of the joint was just as bad! The lights were off, the place was kind of dirty, and the guy behind the counter was flustered and kind of a jerk. And then there was this guy eating by himself and people watching, which really creeped me out. I have never been so uncomfortable in my life!
Next time I'll be sure to come during the day or take it to go!
Went here for dinner one night and found it's small and very crowed, but once you get your pizza, you'll realize it's worth it. I tried a pesto pizza with olives and a sun dried tomato pizza with basil. I enjoyed both.
If you searched this place because you saw Guy Fieri visit here, then we are on the same boat. I visited this place yesterday on a trip to San Diego with my girlfriend, and it was worth it. It may not be in the best of areas, but it really is worth visiting
- Slices are $2.50 each, and are worth it. - So much variety of delicious pizzas - Perfect crunch with savory toppings - There are other selections such as pastas and salads, but get the pizza, you wont regret it.
I'm an east coast transplant and this is one of the few pizzas I've liked in the 5 years I've been living in California. Solid New York style pizza. Reasonable prices. Cash only!
The BEST pizza by the slice. I have always found a tasty selection (most recently it was caramelized onions, pear and goat cheese on one slice and green olives, sausage and pesto on the other). You can sit inside (soccer on the TV) or outside (enjoying SD weather under the umbrellas). Weekends are busy but two slices and an import beer for $8.50? So worth it!
Yes, it's a dive in the middle of a not so upscale neighborhood.
But the thin crust pizza is absolutely yummy! Got the spinach and goat cheese pizza with an bottle of beer and you're set. All for $8.00! What a steal.
Great for a quick meal on your way to discover the other fun things to do in San Diego!
AMAZING PIZZA. Whole, pizza or by the slice, you're sure to enjoy something from their eclectic selection of pies.
Pizzas average at around $15 bucks, but if you're just in for slices you can't beat two slices and a soda for six bucks ($8.50 if you replace the soda with a beer from their wide selection of offerings), Pizzeria Luigi is a pizza joint that cannot be missed in San Diego.

Kids loved the cheese pizza.
